TechBar by Code in Pink, a social enterprise for girls’ IT education

A Calabasas non-profit organization is raising funds to offer a unique concept to help girls with technology education while serving the local community.

Education is a powerful tool to break the cycle of poverty and empower young women to achieve their dreams. That is the mission of Change the Cycle Inc, a local non-profit organization that provides financial assistance, mentoring, and skills training to girls in Los Angeles and around the world. Founded in 2020 by Amalika Ranasinghe and Chamil Hettiarachchi, Calabasas residents who wanted to make a difference in their community and beyond. Since then, they have helped more than 14 girls pursue their education and career goals.

What is TechBar by Code in Pink?

Code in Pink is an education program that teaches girls technology skills and prepares them for the digital economy. TechBar is a unique social enterprise that offers IT services, such as troubleshooting, fixing and upgrading computers and phones on a mobile unit. TechBar travels to different locations in and around Calabasas, collecting used computers and providing IT helpdesk support. Customers enjoy a cozy and welcoming environment, where they can sit back, enjoy coffee and cupcakes, and support a good cause.

The staff are local foster care girls enrolled in the program who receive on-the-job training, financial support, and technology education to help them generate an income and change their lives. The program also connects them with mentors and role models who inspire them to pursue their passions.  The organization is looking to partner with local and international sponsors to provide scholarships. They are planning a fashion show in the fall and a Gala in winter in association with the Calabasas Chamber to raise funds to launch the enterprise. The founders believe in the power of education to transform lives, as they came from Sri Lanka with two suitcases and education enabled them to become change makers themselves. Now they are creating a positive impact in the world and inspiring others.
